HYROX Gym Cost: How Much Does It Cost to Open a HYROX Gym in Malaysia (and How Much Can You Claim Back)

If you've started collecting quotations for a HYROX gym, you might be wondering which kidney you need less.

BUT! Remember:

Big costs = big tax deductions.

Big tax deductions = smaller tax bill.

Logical?

Could be true. But only if you claim them correctly.

So we're going to walk through every major cost of opening a HYROX gym in Malaysia, put a rough RM figure on it, and tag each one as claimable or not.

Here goes nothing.

Sales invoice on a wood table with a red pen, circled grand total RM2519.00, and HYROX Official Equipment header.

New gym, or just add HYROX to yours?

Quick recap: HYROX is an indoor fitness race. Run 1 km, do one workout station, repeat eight times.

And with the HYROX hype only getting hotter, a lot of Malaysians suddenly need somewhere to train.

Good news: you don't need a new building. HYROX sets no minimum floor size or equipment list for its Training Clubs. If you already run a CrossFit box or functional gym, adding HYROX is the cheaper way in.

Opening a dedicated HYROX gym is riskier. So only do it if you have a waitlist or members already interested.

How much does it cost to open a HYROX gym in Malaysia?

Most published figures are in US dollars, so we've converted at roughly RM4.20 to USD1. Where local costs differ a lot, we've used rough Malaysian ranges.

1/ HYROX affiliation

Cost: about RM550 a month, or RM6,300 a year.

This gets you the HYROX name, a listing on the official gym finder, a programming library and marketing assets. It renews automatically every 12 months, and you must cancel 60 days before the end.

Tax tag: Deductible.

2/ Coach certification

Cost: about RM200 for the Foundation course and RM2,100 for Level 1, per coach.

Tax tag: Deductible as staff training.

3/ Equipment

Cost: roughly RM105,000 to RM250,000 for a race-spec setup for a 12 to 16 person class.

Sleds, SkiErgs, rowers, wall balls, kettlebells, sandbags, and somewhere to run. Buy for your class size, not the full race. You don't need 16 SkiErgs.

Tax tag: Capital allowances. Small items may be claimable 100% in one go.

4/ Rent and deposit

Cost: roughly RM8,000 to RM30,000 a month for 3,000 to 6,000 sq ft in the Klang Valley, plus a two to three month deposit.

Tax tag: Rent is deductible. The deposit is not, because you get it back (hopefully).

5/ Fit-out

Cost: roughly RM100,000 to RM300,000 for flooring, a sled lane, lighting, sound and air-con.

Don't spend everything on machines. Sleds chew up bare rubber floors fast.

Tax tag: Mostly not claimable, because renovation becomes part of the building. Items that work like equipment, such as standalone air-con or a sound system, may qualify.

6/ Coaches, software, insurance and marketing

Cost: coaches at roughly RM60 to RM125 an hour, software at RM8,000 to RM21,000 a year, insurance at RM8,000 to RM34,000 a year, and RM21,000 to RM63,000 for launch marketing.

Tax tag: Deductible, including EPF, SOCSO and EIS. But watch the timing (see the red flags).

7/ Company setup and working capital

Cost: roughly RM2,000 to RM12,000 for setup, plus three to six months of fixed costs in the bank.

Tax tag: Setup, company secretary and tax filing fees are deductible for smaller companies, within limits. Your cash buffer isn't.

The grand total

Globally, a HYROX gym costs USD150,000 to USD400,000 to open. That's roughly RM630,000 to RM1.7 million. Malaysia can come in lower thanks to cheaper rent and salaries, and adding HYROX to an existing gym costs a fraction of that.

Which brings us to the fun part.

How much of this can I claim back?

1/ Capital allowances

You can't deduct a RM5,000 SkiErg in one go. You claim it bit by bit. Think of it like tax-friendly depreciation.

For most gym equipment, you get a 20% initial allowance in the year you buy it, then a 14% annual allowance every year after. (PwC Malaysian Tax Booklet)

2/ Small value assets

Items costing RM2,000 or less each can be claimed 100% in the year you buy them. Think kettlebells, wall balls, sandbags and plates.

SMEs have no annual cap. Non-SMEs are capped at RM20,000. Keep your receipts itemised, not one lump-sum "gym equipment" invoice.

3/ Running costs

Rent, salaries, affiliation, coach courses, software, insurance, marketing, utilities.

Claim! Claim! Claim!

4/ What you can't claim

Deposits, most renovation, your cash buffer, fines, and that "business trip" to the HYROX race in Bangkok with your partner.

HYROX gym cost: What this looks like in real life

Spend RM200,000 on equipment in year one, and you can claim RM68,000 in allowances (20% + 14%). At the SME tax rate of 15% to 17%, that's roughly RM10,000 to RM11,500 less tax. Then you keep claiming 14% a year.

A simplified illustration. Your real numbers depend on your profit and what you buy.
